Noida Erupts: Vehicles Torched, Roads Blocked Amid Workers’ Protest

Updated – April 13, 2026 11:02 am IST - DHAKA

Admin
Noida, April 13, 2026: A large-scale workers’ protest in Noida turned violent on Monday, leading to shocking scenes of arson, road blockades, and widespread panic among commuters. What began as a demonstration over wage-related demands quickly escalated into chaos, disrupting daily life across key parts of the city. Protest Turns Violent in Industrial Areas The unrest was primarily reported from Noida’s Phase 2 industrial belt, where hundreds of factory workers gathered to demand better wages and improved working conditions. As tensions rose, protesters blocked major roads in sectors including 1, 60, and 84, bringing traffic to a standstill. Eyewitnesses reported that the situation spiraled out of control when some protesters allegedly began vandalizing property, setting vehicles on fire, and pelting stones. Several cars were damaged, and at least a few were completely burnt during the violence. Traffic Chaos Brings City to a Halt The protest caused massive traffic disruptions not only within Noida but also on routes connecting it to Delhi and nearby regions. Key roads, including those near Chilla Border and Sector 62, witnessed severe congestion, leaving commuters stranded for hours during peak office timings. Authorities issued traffic advisories urging people to avoid affected areas and use alternate routes. However, the sudden escalation left many office-goers stuck in long queues of vehicles, with some reporting delays of over an hour. Commuters Recall Frightening Experience Commuters who were caught in the middle of the unrest described the situation as terrifying and chaotic. Many said they initially had no idea what was happening as crowds gathered and roads were suddenly blocked. One commuter recalled seeing a vehicle engulfed in flames ahead, forcing him to turn back immediately. Others reported stone-pelting and people running in panic as police attempted to control the situation. Another office-goer described the atmosphere as “unsafe,” saying there was confusion everywhere and no clear information about the unfolding events. The lack of coordination and sudden nature of the violence intensified fear among the public. Reasons Behind the Protest The core issue behind the protest is a long-standing demand for higher wages and better working conditions. Workers claim that their salaries have not kept pace with rising living costs and inflation. A major trigger for the agitation has been the recent increase in minimum wages in neighbouring Haryana, which workers say has created a significant pay gap for similar jobs. Additionally, protesters raised concerns about lack of workplace safety, irregular salary payments, and insufficient benefits such as overtime pay and weekly offs. Police Action and Administration Response Heavy police deployment was seen across the affected areas as authorities tried to bring the situation under control. In some locations, police reportedly used mild force to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation. Officials stated that the situation is being closely monitored and additional forces have been deployed in sensitive zones. Efforts are also underway to restore normalcy and ensure public safety. Meanwhile, the administration has initiated talks with worker representatives to address their grievances and prevent further unrest. Measures Announced to Address Worker Concerns In response to the escalating situation, authorities have reiterated several labour welfare measures. These include timely salary disbursal, overtime pay benefits, medical coverage, and improved grievance redressal mechanisms. Officials have appealed to workers to maintain peace and avoid violence, assuring them that their demands are being considered seriously. Wider Impact on Daily Life The incident has raised concerns about law and order as well as the functioning of industrial zones in Noida. Businesses faced disruptions, employees struggled to reach offices, and public transport services were affected. The ripple effect was felt across the National Capital Region (NCR), highlighting how such unrest can quickly impact urban infrastructure and economic activity.
